Make it Monday: Woven Rag Rug

This woven rug is made from old sheets and a loom made from a cardboard box.

Supplies:
  • 2 old sheets queen size (I used one queen and one twin but I had to use more white than blue because of that)
  • A large cardboard box
  • Duct tape
  • Scissors
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Yarn needle

1.  Flatten out your cardboard box as big as you can make it. The size of your box will determine the size of your rug. Tape over any slits in the cardboard

2.  Cut 1 cm wide, 2 inch long slits along the longest side of your cardboard. The rug will shrink in width and will be exactly as long as the distance between the slotted sides.

3.  Cut your sheets into 1 inch stripes. Cotton sheets tear easily so you can just cut a small slit in the side of the sheet and then pull to rip. It will only do this in one direction

4.  Slide the strips between the cardboard slits at least four per slot. It depends on how thick you want the rug and how thick your sheets are. Once you have done this take one strip and weave it through the layers length-wise. Tie on more strips as you go and trim the ends.  As you go slide the weaving strips towards one end to make the weave as tight as you would like. When you get to the end just tie it off and trim!

Tip: Do Not put your rug in the washing machine. I did this and it came out as a big knot of strings!:(

Stay crafty,

Beautiful! Is there any trick to getting that pattern?

I did two rows white and then one row blue only because I had more white and it came out with an almost diamond pattern (I think the blue strips kinda look like diamonds the way that they are pressed from each side) but you could mix it up however you want. You don't have to put strips of the same color in each slot but whatever is on top will show the most. I'm really curious what it would look like with 5 or more colors.
